UCPath is the University of California’s priority program to implement a comprehensive payroll, benefits, human resources and academic personnel solution for all UC employees.
First Q&A Session
On Oct. 31, approximately 140 participants attended the first UPath Q&A session in-person and remotely by Zoom. All PPS users were invited to the session to hear about Path and to ask questions.
The session was scheduled to support the information provided in Path Guides to the Chief Personnel Officers (CPO) and change champions earlier in the month. This session provided an overview of Path as well as an introduction to the UCPath Portal: employee self-service and manager self-service.
The Q&A sessions will continue to be regularly scheduled to support new updates/content provided each month in the Path Guides and to provide the information needed to prepare for implementation. If you have any questions about the Q&A sessions, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Mario Gomez is a student employee and the UCPath team’s communications assistant. For the past year, he has worked with the communications lead to create content for the UCPath website, newsletters and to support all communications for the project. In this role, Mario is able to exercise his creativity and occasionally his programming skills to support the website. He is also able to apply his experience with Adobe Suite and has furthered his love for creative direction and design.
Mario is a senior computer science major at UCI specializing in information. He is originally from the Inland Empire and is a transfer from Riverside Community College District. At one point, he was taking classes at all three schools in the Norco, Riverside and Moreno Valley districts.
After graduation, he hopes to start a career in the field of human-computer interaction or software development in the field of artificial intelligence. Among his interests, his favorite things to do are play tennis with friends from his hometown and trying new foods with his girlfriend, Clara. He also likes to design graphics, create user interfaces, and illustrate on his own time.
Testing Prepares for Deployment
The past two months have been a busy time for the UCPath team and representatives from the campus who are preparing to train those who will be transacting in UCPath.
Integration testing is underway, which includes testing the end-to-end processes in the UCPath system. We are using the system that is currently in production at UCLA, UCR, UCSB, and UCM.
Testing is taking place in our dedicated UCPath training and testing facility, ICF 315, located near the Engineering buildings. We are getting used to the facility and putting in some improvements, which will house all the training for UCPath to be conducted starting in January.
Having a dedicated facility gives us the opportunity to discuss what we are learning and address questions as they arise. The team is able to use test information as well as test transactions that they would normally use in their daily work.
In late November we plan to introduce UCPath to some additional representatives from each division who will get a chance to try some transactions in the system.
Composite Benefit Rate Open ForumsUCI will be transitioning to a Composite Benefit Rate (CBR) structure for distributing UC-paid benefits costs when the campus goes live with UCPath (currently scheduled for March 2019). Employee paid benefits are not affected by CBR.
CBR provides a simpler, more predictable means to manage departmental employee fringe benefit costs. Based on employee groupings, employer paid benefits will be pooled and charged CBR as a percent of salary to eligible components of pay rather than the multiple benefit charges assessed today.

We will be holding campus-wide open forums for faculty and staff who manage accounts/grants with payroll activity to learn more about CBR. The first session will be held on Monday, Dec. 3. Training Coming Soon
The materials and schedule for UCPath training are currently being finalized. We are less than 8 weeks away from the first day of training. Our dedicated team of trainers is delivering their first practice sessions of our training courses to a select group of UCI employees during the week of November 13.

UCR Lessons Learned
Over the last few months, UCR has hosted team members from UCI in conversations with their Accounting and Academic Personnel teams to discuss their experiences with UCPath to date. On Monday, Nov. 5, the local project teams from UCR and UCI met at the UCPath Center to discuss lessons learned and topics such as training and organizational change management delivery, gaps, effectiveness, and issues. The teams also discussed data conversion issues, operations, metrics, and technical challenges.
UC Riverside was a pilot location, one of the first locations to implement UCPath, and went live January 2, 2018. The four-hour session was an opportunity for the UCI team to observe operations post-go-live and to address any hurdles or areas of potential risk. Now with UCLA and UCSB live with UCPath, the discussions will be on-going as we prepare for UCPath at UCI.
